Most silicone sponge materials on the market are made from polydimethylsiloxane (PMDS) derived from gum.

Every commercially available silicone sponge product is composed of polydimethyl siloxane (PMDS) generated from gum. This polymer is chemically expanded to create the closed-cell sponge structure when subjected to heat. Closed cells mean the cells are interconnected, preventing water from passing through the sponge. Closed-cell silicone sponges typically exhibit superior mechanical properties and a complete cell structure.

The expanded closed silicone sponge offers several performance advantages over the traditional solid silicone, making it an excellent alternative.
