Polymethylmethacrylate (Polymethylmethacrylate, referred to as PMMA, English Acrylic), also known as Acrylic or plexiglas, is more known as a Jiali glue in Hong Kong, with high transparency, low price, easy to mechanical processing and other advantages, is the usual use of glass replacement materials.
The monomer of polymethyl methacrylate is methyl methacrylate (MMA, acrylic monomer).
Excellent transparency, outstanding aging resistance; Its specific gravity is less than half of ordinary glass, but its anti-fragmentation ability is several times higher; It has good insulation and mechanical strength; It has strong corrosion resistance to acid, alkali and salt. And easy to process; Can be bonded, sawing, planing, drilling, engraving, grinding, screen printing, sandblasting and other manual and mechanical processing, heating can be bending molding into a variety of acrylic products.
Physical properties of
1. The density of PMMA is lower than that of glass: the density of PMMA is about 1150-1190 kg/m3, which is half of glass (2400-2800 kg/m3);
2. The weight of PMMA is light: the density of PMMA is 1.19g/cm3, and the weight of the material of the same size is only half of that of ordinary glass and 43% of that of metal aluminum (belonging to light metal).
3.PMMA mechanical strength is high: the relative molecular mass of organic glass is about 2 million, which is a long chain of polymer compounds, and the chain of molecules is very soft. Therefore, the strength of organic glass is relatively high, and the ability of tensile resistance and impact resistance is 7 to 18 times higher than that of ordinary glass. There is a kind of plexiglas that has been heated and stretched, and the molecular chain segments in it are arranged very orderly, which makes the toughness of the material significantly improved. Nail into this plexiglass, even if the nail penetrates, the plexiglass does not produce cracks. The plexiglass also does not break into pieces when pierced by a bullet. Therefore, stretched plexaglass can be used as bulletproof glass and also as a seat cover on military aircraft.
4.PMMA has a low melting point: the melting point of PMMA is about 130-140 °C (265-285 °F), which is much lower than the high temperature of glass of about 1000 degrees.

8. Infrared: PMMA allows infrared rays with wavelengths less than 2800nm to pass through. Longer wavelengths of IR, less than 25,000nm, are essentially blocked. There are special colored PMMA that allow specific wavelengths of IR to pass through while blocking visible light (applications such as remote control or thermal sensing).
Because of its large branch chain, the viscosity of polymethyl methacrylate is high, so the processing speed is relatively slow when using the thermal processing method. Plexiglass can not only be cut by lathe, drill by drilling, but also can be bonded into various shapes of utensils such as acetone and chloroform. It can also be used to process plastic molding methods such as blow molding, injection and extrusion into various products such as aircraft seat covers and small dentures and dental brackets.
Cyanoacrylate, dichloromethane or chloroform can dissolve the plexiglass slightly, and then the two plexiglass can be firmly bonded together.
To produce 1 kg of PMMA, approximately 2 kg of oil is required. In the case of oxygen, PMMA starts to burn at 460°C, and after combustion, carbon dioxide, water, carbon monoxide and some low molecular compounds including formaldehyde are generated.
Injection mold process conditions
Drying treatment: PMMA is hygroscopic so drying treatment before processing is necessary. The recommended drying condition is 90C for 2~4 hours.
Melting temperature: 240~270C. Mold temperature: 35~70C.

Chemical and Physical properties PMMA has excellent optical properties and weather resistance. The penetration of white light is as high as 92%. PMMA products have very low birefringence, especially suitable for making video discs. PMMA has room temperature creep characteristics. With the increase of load and time, the stress cracking phenomenon can be caused. PMMA has better impact resistance.
Due to the shortcomings of PMMA surface hardness is not high, easy to wipe, low impact resistance, poor molding flow performance, PMMA modification has appeared one after another. Such as methyl methacrylate and styrene, butadiene copolymerization, PMMA and PC blending. Super transparent PMMA material is mainly used for mobile phone protection screen. The product is divided into two types: hardened coating and no hardened coating. It is characterized by excellent light transmittance, no impurities, electrostatic protective film, hardness after hardening thick surface can reach more than 5-6h. At present, it is particularly recommended to use PMMA material for hardening treatment, which is called raw plate in China.
PC lens introduction: First used for military and industrial protection (such as aircraft transparent bin, safety mask, etc.), the material has excellent impact resistance. After the 1990s, due to the development of science and technology, optical grade PC materials were applied and began to be used for advanced optical lenses. The 0.5cm PC material can block pistol shooting from 20 meters away, and the general PC lens is not easy to break with a hammer.
